Member Spotlight: Cathy Ko

MEET CATHY:
1. When and Why did you first start coming to Coastal Strength & Fitness?
I married my childhood sweetheart. We had our ups and downs but he struggled with alcoholism and became increasingly abusive. After 13 years of marriage we split up. About a month later he was diagnosed with liver cancer and then 9 days later he died. I felt totally out of control. So what did I do? I decided I wanted to be strong and healthy. To be a role model for my son. To be the best me possible. I was scared but signed up for an introductory 21 days for $21 in May of 2017 and never looked back.
2. What fitness activities/sports were you doing before you joined Coastal?
I wasn't really athletic growing up. I did snow ski and scuba dive but nothing competitive. I was living a pretty sedentary life for years prior to joining Coastal. I had never lifted weights or even done a proper squat.
3. What results have you seen since you joined Coastal Strength & Fitness?
I'm much more confident and happier than I've been in a long time. I am stronger. I am leaner. I didn't do measurements in the very beginning but I've gone from a size 10 to a size 2 and lost 28 lbs [20% of my body weight) which on my 4'10" frame is a big chunk.
4. What do you like most about Coastal Strength & Fitness?
I've learned a lot about proper form and nutrition but if I had to pick 1 thing it would be the community. I've been encouraged and held accountable and made friends that I didn't know I wanted or needed. The people (coaches and members) and the relationships are the best part of CSF.
5. What is your favorite Coastal training day of the week and why?
I really love Saturday yoga with Jillian. My flexibility/balance/mobility/breath have gotten so much better and it helps me with my strength training days.
Lightning Round Questions:
1. What is your Spirit animal?
Phoenix...because I'm rising from the ashes of my former self.
2. If you were a Superhero, what would your super power be?
I think being able to fly would be kind of awesome.
3. What is your favorite treat meal?
I really love food but my favorite treat would be fried chicken, especially the crispy skin.
