Does Fruit Make You Fat?

You always hear the recommendation to cut out fruit when 
trying to lose fat.
 
I always ask why?
 
Fruit is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It's full 
of enzymes, fiber and antioxidants that are essential for 
longevity and performance.
 
Fructose is the big fear.
 
The reason for that is that the liver is the only organ in 
the body that can process fructose. And liver glycogen 
stores fill up rather quickly.
 
Once they're full the glucose spills over into your fat 
stores.
 
Ok. That's bad. Nobody wants that.
 
The simple fix is to not eat 13 pounds of fruit per day.

 

Just like anything in life, moderation is key.
 
But you can certainly have 3-5 pieces.
 
Berries should be your first choice.
 
Then eat seasonally. Grapefruits and citrus fruits are great 
in the fight against estrogen. Apples are fantastic. Peaches,
 pears, plums, pineapple, watermelon and grapes are all good.
 
This shouldn't be earth-shattering news.

 

You hear stories of trainers telling clients not to eat a banana. If a daily banana is causing the obesity epidemic than we might as well give up.  
 
I know a lot of people and have a lot of clients who eat tons of fruit during the day and
are lean and/or losing fat. 
 
The other thing to be aware of is that fruit doesn't only 
contain fructose. It also contains other forms of carbs/sugar
 like glucose.
 
That's the primary fuel for high intensity training. And 
the Coastal Crew loves  some high intensity training.
 
So have some fruit and don't stress the minor details.
